America’s alcohol history dates back to the Native Americans who cultivated alcohol for tribal and religious ceremonies. When the Europeans came to North America they began to ferment peach juice and apple cider, as well as import rum from the West Indies. In 1770, many Americans would start their day with a drink and would enjoy rum or hard cider with every meal. After the American Revolution, the British refused to supply the former colonies with rum which opened the door to whiskey production in Kentucky and Ohio. There was so much whiskey that it was cheaper than beer, coffee or milk. Obviously Prohibition would cripple the liquor industry, but post-Prohibition saw the emergence of liquor production back in the United States. Today there are craft distilleries as well as large production facilities which produce all types of liquor. American is a melting pot, and the modern-day liquor industry is the same.
