A liqueur is an alcoholic drink that is composed of distilled spirits that are flavored with herbs, spices, fruit, flowers or nuts and are finished with a sweetener (sugar). Liqueurs can acquire their flavor through infusion, extraction, distillation or smoking and are generally 48-120 proof.
Liqueurs are descendant of herbal medicine and were made in Italy as early as the 13th century, and moved into France in the 14th century. Nowadays liqueurs are served with desserts, neat, over ice with coffee, mixed in cocktails or used in cooking. Liqueurs continue to push the edge with new and creative liqueurs to try!
