About Whyte and Mackay
Mackinlay’s Original was registered in 1847. In 1907 Ernest Shackleton ordered 25 cases of Mackinlay’s Rare Old Highland Malt for his South Pole expedition. In 1985 Invergordon Distillers took over Charles Mackinlay & Co. Then in 1993 Whyte and Mackay (which was founded in Glasgow in 1844) acquired Invergordon Distillers and the Mackinlay brand. An odd thing happened in 2007, as the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust discovered 11 bottles of Mackinlay’s Rare Old Highland Malt at Ernes Shackleton’s base camp. Whyte and Mackay set out to recreate the whisky found in Shackleton’s camp.
